Pearl of Wisdom
Meet Pearl. She is a patient who has a story to tell and experience to share. Pearl’s story is familiar to patients who have undergone weight loss surgery: she felt like a failure because she had regained weight after her sleeve gastrectomy performed 5 years earlier by another surgeon at a University hospital. Pearl was embarrassed, but she finally decided to get help. She called our office for a consultation with me. After our meeting, we decided on a plan to help her lose weight and importantly, to sustain and maintain her health goals long term. The plan had three parts: 1. Medically-supervised diet and nutritional coaching pre-operatively 2. Revision surgery of the sleeve gastrectomy 3. Nutritional coaching and modified meal replacement plan post-operatively. Good news, it worked! Pearl has lost 112 lbs. in 11 months, including 40 lbs. she had lost pre-operatively by following our medically-supervised diet program and walking everyday. Pearl continues to lose weight and maintain her nutritional needs by using our recommended protein meal replacement shakes twice daily. Another bonus, Pearl’s son has also lost significant weight himself by learning from his mother and “stealing” her protein meal replacement shakes! His waist has shrunken from 44” to 34” in the process!
Check out Pearl’s before and after photos above. Pearl shows us that she wears a fitness tracker on her left wrist, and she is drinking more water with her portable water bottle as part of her new healthy habits and lifestyle. The “pearls of wisdom” in Pearl’s story can be summed up below:
- Don’t be ashamed if you have regained weight, it is part of the normal weight loss curve after ALL weight loss surgeries. Seek help to get back on track.
- Surgery is one part, changing eating habits and exercising make up the other two parts of a successful equation for patients who need to lose a significant amount of weight.
- Changing habits and lifestyle is a commitment that benefits you and your family…remember Pearl lost 40 lbs. preoperatively and inspired her son to practice healthier habits, too!
