Which Weight Loss Procedure is Right for Me?

The New Year has come and gone, and the Super Bowl LIV celebrations are over. Time to focus on your health goals. If you have been thinking about surgery for weight loss and wondering which procedure is right for you, or if you are stalled in your weight loss journey, then read on! I will be describing various weight loss procedures in the next few newsletters to help you understand the options available to you. I hope that the information provided will help guide you and encourage you to take the next step. Or help you inform a loved one of their options.

Weight loss procedures available today are considered either non-surgical or surgical, which are mostly performed through minimally invasive techniques that minimize visible scars. The table below lists these options:

MINIMALLY INVASIVE WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY

NON-SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS PROCEDURES

Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Balloon

Revision Gastric Sleeve

AspireAssist®

Gastric Bypass Roux-En-Y (RYGB)

Endoscopic Botox®

Revision RYGB

Medically Supervised Diets with Medication

LAP-BAND over Gastric Bypass (Band over Bypass)

Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG)

LAP-BAND®

Replacement LAP-BAND®

Among the surgical procedures, the most popular is the Gastric Sleeve, however, the gold standard is the Gastric Bypass Roux-En-Y, and the safest is the LAP-BAND® procedure. A gastric balloon is a great option for patients who are looking to jumpstart their weight loss journey and who want a temporary aid. The AspireAssist® provides an alternative for those who need help to control calorie consumption by enabling patients to release a third of the consumed food before digestion. And for some patients, tailored revisional weight loss surgery may be necessary to achieve the necessary restriction in order to continue or restart weight loss. Regardless of the weight loss procedure, your personal commitment to change your eating and exercising habits and follow-up visits with your doctor are keys to success.
